The Florida Board of Governors voted 10 to 6 against Santa Ono's appointment as president of the University of Florida, largely due to conservative opposition related to his past support for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Activist Chris Rufo led the criticism, citing Ono's alleged failure to protect Jewish students at the University of Michigan. Despite Ono's attempts to distance himself from DEI, claiming it had become divisive, his ideological shift did not assuage concerns, culminating in a contentious meeting with divided opinions from board members.
"I am here to ensure that DEI never returns to the University of Florida," Ono said Tuesday.
Ono emphasized his ideological evolution, which ultimately failed to convince the board.
The Board of Governors voted 10 to 6 to reject Ono for the UF job.
Throughout the meeting Renner grilled Ono on his past support for DEI, prompting fellow board members to push back.
