Starlite Coney Island on Center Road will be closed for approximately 90 days after a speeding vehicle slammed into the side of the building on Aug. 23, cracking the structure in two locations. Ownership removed all kitchen equipment to allow structural repairs, and the restaurant is insured. Fifty employees from the Center Road location are currently displaced, and management aims to reopen quickly to restore jobs. The Court Street Starlite briefly closed due to an electrical fire but reopened Aug. 26. Starlite Coney Island is approaching its 60th anniversary and serves burgers, coneys, pancakes and breakfasts.
Jason Hester, co-owner of Starlite, said a vehicle was speeding around the parking lot and it slammed into the side of the building on Aug. 23. "It's probably going to be every bit of three months (to reopen)," Hester said. Ownership had to remove everything from the kitchen to make structural repairs to the building, which was cracked in two locations from the impact. Hester couldn't provide an exact estimate of the damage but described it as "a lot." The restaurant is insured.
Fifty employees who work at the Center Road location are currently displaced, Hester said. "It's ultimately our goal to get open as quickly as possible and get our employees back working," Hester said. Starlite Coney Island is approaching its 60th anniversary of serving Flint-area customers this upcoming year. "We've been a staple in the community for a long time," Hester said. "We serve a lot of burgers, coneys, pancakes and breakfasts. Our goal is always to feed the masses."
