Melodee Buzzard, a 9-year-old from Santa Barbara County, was found dead on Dec. 6 in a remote area near Utah state Route 24. The body was decomposed and had gunshot wounds to the head. Investigators linked evidence from the Utah scene to a cartridge case recovered at the mother's home, and an FBI lab produced a familial DNA match to Ashlee Buzzard. Ashlee Buzzard was arrested at her Vandenberg Village home on suspicion of first-degree murder and is believed to have acted alone while remaining uncooperative. The case was described as particularly shocking due to alleged premeditation and ruthlessness.
