Bishop confronts Trump during sermon at inaugural prayer service
Briefly

During a prayer service at Washington's National Cathedral, Bishop Mariann Budde directly addressed President Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance, urging the president to consider the welfare of marginalized groups, particularly LGBTQ+ children and undocumented immigrants. Budde's sermon criticized recent executive orders by Trump that she viewed as harmful. She highlighted the contributions of immigrants and emphasized their humanity, countering the narrative that equates immigration with crime. This event follows Budde's previous critiques of Trump, including his photo-op outside St. John's Church in 2020, which her congregation found problematic.
Millions have put their trust in you. And as you told the nation yesterday, you have felt the providential hand of a loving God. In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now.
The people who pick our crops and clean our office buildings; who labor in poultry farms and meat packing plants; who wash the dishes after we eat in restaurants and work the night shifts in hospitals, they may not be citizens or have the proper documentation. But the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals.
Everything he has said and done is to inflame violence. We need moral leadership.
