Big U.S. cities grew in 2024, reversing covid-era population declines
Briefly

Recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates a significant recovery in populations of major American cities following pandemic-related declines. Notably, cities like New York, Houston, and Los Angeles are leading this resurgence. Approximately 94 percent of the largest cities saw growth in a year ending June 2024, marking the largest growth in nearly 25 years. Experts attribute this turnaround to a surge in immigration and a reversal of trends caused by COVID-19, including previous losses from deaths and relocations to smaller cities.
The net international immigration ended up spread out across a lot of places, with a lot of cities of various sizes and regions experiencing growth.
This shows a real bounce-back for a lot of these cities, marking the highest nationwide population increase we’ve seen in a generation.
