BATA opened a new 87,000-square-foot operations center and headquarters in 2024, and a transit-oriented development with adjacent housing is underway. Jeff Meilbeck was hired as the agency's next Executive Director. BATA continues planning and implementing service expansions to meet a growing population across Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties. The agency is adopting and further developing alternative-fueled vehicles, including electric buses. BATA emphasizes recruiting and retaining high-quality, customer-focused staff. Traverse City has about 15,700 residents and the four-county metropolitan area about 156,600. Population growth is increasing demand for public transit as new residents from urban areas and retirees seek transit options.
