The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland's Edinburgh Zoo has welcomed a new pygmy hippo calf named Haggis, born on October 30 to parents Otto and Gloria.
Jonny Appleyard, hoofstock team leader, noted that the newborn has a vibrant personality. However, visitors must wait to see her as the care team focuses on monitoring her initial development.
Pygmy hippos are endangered, with only around 2,000 remaining worldwide due to habitat loss and hunting. Their preservation is crucial for biodiversity.
Haggis' birth will not only delight zoo visitors but also serve as a vital opportunity to raise awareness about the conservation needs of pygmy hippos.
