As Voice of America Goes Dark, Some Broadcasts Are Replaced by Music
Briefly

For over 80 years, Voice of America served as a critical outlet for news in authoritarian regions but has ceased operations following an executive order by President Trump. Employees were abruptly placed on paid leave, losing access to crucial communication tools. The agency's broadcasts, once a counter to state media narratives from countries like Russia and China, have now gone dark in several regions, highlighting a significant setback for U.S. efforts to promote democratic values and credible information abroad.
Now those broadcasts long viewed as an important part of U.S. efforts to promote democracy and transparency overseas are flickering out.
Employees said they quickly lost access to their work email and other communications programs.
Some of those affiliates also carry content provided by state media from countries like Russia and China, which Voice of America's programming had, in effect, countered.
They have pulled the plug operationally, said David K. Seide, a lawyer at the Government Accountability Project who defends federal whistle-blowers.
