Recent proposed cuts to education funding, especially under Linda McMahon's leadership at the Department of Education (DOE), have raised alarms among educators. Administrators brace for potential impacts like increased class sizes and reduced support for low-income students. Gov. Maura Healey emphasized that dismantling the DOE could lead to a devastating loss of $2 billion in federal funding for Massachusetts schools, adversely affecting special education programs and rural districts. Such changes would undermine educational support systems and threaten extracurricular activities essential for student development.
"What Donald Trump, Elon Musk and Linda McMahon are doing is bad for children, bad for schools, and bad for our communities," Healey said in a statement. "Congress cannot let this happen."
In her speech, McMahon said she aims to cut red tape; empower parents to make better educational choices; prioritize core subjects like math, reading, science, and history over DEI initiatives.
