A coalition of immigrant rights and legal aid organizations, including the ACLU, has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration to prevent the transfer of migrants to Guantanamo Bay. The lawsuit does not dispute the authority to detain or deport migrants but argues that sending them to Guantanamo is illegal and unnecessary given the available detention facilities in the U.S. The group alleges that such transfers aim to instill fear among immigrants. The litigation seeks to prevent these transfers and potentially block any such future actions.
"Sending inmates to a remote abusive prison is not only illegal and unprecedented, but illogical given the additional cost and logistical complications," said Lee Gelernt.
The lawsuit asserts that there is no legitimate reason for the U.S. to send migrants to Guantanamo, highlighting the ample detention capacity within the country.
