Senator Chris Van Hollen revealed that Maryland resident Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was mistakenly deported by the Trump administration, suffered traumatic experiences during his nearly three-week stay at the notorious CECOT prison in El Salvador. After a recent meeting with Garcia, Van Hollen noted that despite being moved to a slightly better facility, Garcia remains in isolation and continues to struggle with the psychological impact of his detention. His experiences highlight issues of human rights abuses faced by deportees.
Mr. Abrego Garcia felt very sad to be in a place that's meant for criminals, having been mistakenly deported and traumatized during his detention.
During his time at CECOT, Mr. Abrego Garcia reported being traumatized, not fearful of his immediate cellmates, but of the taunts from other prisoners.
