Audrey Backeberg disappeared at the age of 20 after hitchhiking with her babysitter. Recently, Sauk County Sheriff's Office located her alive in another state. Detective Isaac Hanson linked her to an arrest record and traced her through family ancestry records. Despite her troubled past, including an abusive marriage, Backeberg, now in her 80s, expressed her desire to remain undiscovered. The case highlights the complexities of long-term missing person cases and the sensitive nature of reconstructing a life after significant trauma.
"She's happy, safe and secure; And just kind of lived under the radar for that long," Isaac Hanson, detective with the sheriff's office, said.
"It happened so fast," he said. "I was expecting the deputy to call me back and say, 'Oh nobody answered the door...'"
