Ken Martin, a leading candidate for the Democratic National Committee chair, has garnered support from 200 party members, nearing the necessary 225 votes for victory. With only 25 votes needed, Martin emphasized the campaign's growing momentum. Other candidates, like Martin O'Malley and Ben Wikler, have reported significantly fewer endorsements. Despite some opposition from institutional Democratic officials, Martin maintains strong backing among state party leaders, positioning him as a key contender heading into the election on February 1.
I'm honored to have gained the support of leaders from across the country, Mr. Martin said. Our campaign is gaining momentum and we're going to continue to work hard for people's votes.
Mr. Martin's campaign did not release a list of his backers, though more than 100 national committee members have made their support for him public.
Mr. Martin, who founded and led an organization of Democratic state party leaders, has demonstrated support among fellow state party chairs and vice chairs.
Many institutional Democratic officials have privately complained about Mr. Martin's attempt to lead the party, but they have made little public effort to block him from winning.
