"The Washington Post is taking a number of difficult but decisive actions today for our future, in what amounts to a significant restructuring across the company,"
"These steps are designed to strengthen our footing and sharpen our focus on delivering the distinctive journalism that sets The Post apart and, most importantly, engages our customers."
"donate a decent chunk of dough to these hardworking employees,"
"Post Guild members have come together to support their colleagues with this GoFundMe,"
More than 1,000 supporters donated over $130,000 to a GoFundMe created for Washington Post journalists laid off during a company restructuring. The fundraiser launched hours after executives began cutting staff and has outpaced similar efforts at other newsrooms. Reporter Rachel Siegel and the Washington-Baltimore News Guild organized the campaign. Tech journalist and former Post employee Kara Swisher donated $10,000 and encouraged others to contribute after previously trying to buy the paper. Other notable donors included former Post staffers Eugene Robinson and Fred Barbash. The union blamed inexcusable business decisions by top leadership for the cuts, while company leadership described the changes as a significant restructuring intended to strengthen focus on distinctive journalism and customer engagement.
