Edward Leon, 53, has been federally indicted for allegedly setting a house fire in Schenectady on May 2, 2013, that resulted in four deaths, including three children. He faces serious charges, including malicious use of fire resulting in death. If convicted, he could face significant prison time, potentially life in prison or even the death penalty. A detention hearing is planned to decide if he remains in custody as the trial approaches. The investigation was conducted over nearly 12 years by the ATF and local authorities.
Edward Leon, 53, was arraigned Thursday in federal court in Albany on charges that he used fire to maliciously destroy a rental property at 438 Hulett Street on May 2, 2013.
Federal prosecutors allege Leon intentionally set the fire that engulfed the two-story building, resulting in the deaths of David Terry and his three children.
He now faces a count of malicious use of fire resulting in death, which carries a minimum of seven years in prison and could lead to life imprisonment or the death penalty.
A detention hearing is scheduled for Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. to determine whether Leon will remain in custody pending trial.
