US Supreme Court debates citizenship, with rare Trump visit
"Sauer argued to the court that 'unrestricted birthright citizenship contradicts the practice of the overwhelming majority of modern nations' and 'demeans the priceless and profound gift of American citizenship.'"
"'It operates as a powerful pull factor for illegal immigration and rewards illegal aliens who not only violate the immigration laws but also jump in front of those who follow the rules,' he said."
Donald Trump made a historic appearance at the Supreme Court, where Solicitor General John Sauer challenged the constitutionality of birthright citizenship. Trump signed an executive order on his first day in office to strip citizenship from children of undocumented immigrants, conflicting with the 14th Amendment. Lower courts have rejected this order, and a ruling from the Supreme Court is expected in June. Trump is the first sitting president to attend such a hearing, listening alongside Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick while protests occurred outside.
