Donald Trump’s campaign attempted to distance themselves from comedian Tony Hinchcliffe after his controversial jokes about Puerto Rico and immigrant communities at a rally.
Hinchcliffe's act, which included the comparison of Puerto Rico to a 'floating pile of garbage,' drew laughter from some attendees and gasps from others, prompting GOP Sen. Rick Scott to say the joke bombed.
Following Hinchcliffe's remarks, prominent Democrats criticized the Trump campaign, calling out the comedian's rhetoric, with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz leading the charge during a live stream.
In response to the backlash, a senior adviser to the Trump campaign stated that Hinchcliffe's joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign.
