Myanmar junta's promise of elections denounced as sham' by experts
Briefly

Myanmar's military has pledged elections for December 2025 or January 2026, a move viewed by many as a facade following its 2021 coup. Despite support from China, opposition to the elections is widespread among Western nations and political watchdogs due to the military's repression of dissent and continued imprisonment of political figures, such as Aung San Suu Kyi. With the military's control diminishing and armed resistance gaining ground, the feasibility and integrity of any upcoming elections remain in serious doubt, rendering them a potential sham.
It's clear that holding an election currently is only about the military's desire to legitimize its power, amidst overwhelming opposition and unrest.
Given the military's extensive territorial losses and the ongoing armed resistance, the credibility of any elections scheduled for late 2025 is highly questionable.
