After making her first-ever presidential endorsement this spring, billionaire philanthropist Melinda French Gates said she made a "substantial" donation to Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign, Vanity Fair reported. French Gates, who now focuses on women's and reproductive rights, views a second term for Trump as "dangerous" for these issues.
When French Gates was still a part of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, she generally avoided wading into partisan causes. However, she has committed to spending $1 billion through 2026 to support groups advocating for women and reproductive rights.
French-Gates mentioned that her support extends beyond a direct financial contribution. In addition to her donation, she has offered to host events and described her alignment with Harris, noting that they are "like-minded on many issues."
As mega donors continue to funnel money into the election, French Gates believes Silicon Valley's political affiliation is more complex than a simple shift to the right. "I'm not sure that's right," she said, indicating that the Valley is actually "quite split Democrat and Republican."
