Speaker Mike Johnson is facing a tough battle for re-election as hard-line conservatives within his party express dissatisfaction and demand stronger leadership following a contentious spending deal.
Despite unanimous Republican support in November, hard-line lawmakers have turned against Mr. Johnson due to resentment over a year-end spending deal, and he needs almost unanimous backing.
Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky made it clear that he would not support Mr. Johnson under any circumstances, stating, 'You can pull all my fingernails out... I am not voting for Mike Johnson.'
With Trump’s endorsement and no other challengers in sight, Johnson remains hopeful for quick passage of his re-election, but needs significant support from the divided House Republican conference.
