In 2019, Boris Johnson and Donald Trump discussed a potential post-Brexit US-UK trade deal, highlighting various British products. However, despite initial enthusiasm and the start of formal talks, no agreement materialized. Currently, the UK appears to pursue a narrower economic deal concentrating on technology cooperation. This approach reflects a broader lack of US interest in expansive trade agreements. Political complications, like divergent agricultural standards and the UK's commitment to the NHS, further hinder a comprehensive deal, especially in light of Labour's aim for tighter trade relations with the EU.
When Boris Johnson flew to meet Donald Trump for the first time at the Biarritz G7 summit in 2019, he boasted en route to reporters about the huge benefits a post-Brexit trade deal with the US would bring, citing a baffling range of great British products, from pork pies to shower trays.
Despite the positive chemistry between the two blond blowhards, and the launch of formal talks the following year, no agreement was ever reached.
What the US and UK now appear to be aiming at... is not a broad-based free trade agreement... but something much more limited.
The health secretary...has also indicated that accepting US food standards would scupper any veterinary agreement with Brussels.
