UK drivers reveal why they are not switching to electric vehicles
"A constant stream of misinformation is skewing petrol car drivers' knowledge of EVs. With two-thirds not knowing that EVs are cheaper to own and run than petrol cars, it's clear that many are being held back from making the shift to electric motoring based on false assumptions rather than factual considerations."
"A notable misconception revealed was that 46 per cent of drivers wrongly believed electric vehicles are more prone to catching fire than traditionally fuelled cars, despite various studies demonstrating the opposite. This fundamental misunderstanding about vehicle safety represents a significant barrier to EV adoption among the general driving population."
"Among this ill-informed group, just 5 per cent expressed a desire for an EV as their next car, a stark contrast to the 63 per cent of those who scored at least eight out of 10. This dramatic difference illustrates how knowledge directly correlates with consumer interest in transitioning to electric vehicles."
Research from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit reveals significant gaps in public understanding about electric vehicles among traditional car drivers. A YouGov survey of 1,002 non-electric car drivers found that 51 percent could correctly answer only two or fewer out of ten statements about EVs. Among poorly informed respondents, just 5 percent expressed interest in purchasing an EV next, compared to 63 percent of those who scored at least eight out of ten. Common misconceptions include the false belief that electric vehicles are more prone to catching fire than petrol cars, and widespread unawareness that EVs are cheaper to own and operate. This misinformation barrier significantly impacts consumer willingness to transition to electric motoring.
