According to the National Audit Office, Boris Johnson’s initiative to create 20,000 new prison spots by 2026 will be completed five years late and billions over budget.
The MoJ anticipates a prison capacity shortfall of 12,400 spaces by 2027, reflecting a structural mismatch between expected demand and current expansion efforts.
Previous Conservative governments have contributed to the current capacity issues, as they failed to adequately align prison space expansion with criminal justice policies.
Expansion plans for the prison estate, now projected to cost between £9.4 billion and £10.1 billion, will be at least £4.2 billion over prior estimates.
