GMB Scotland has announced plans for strikes among Scottish Water employees after pay discussions fell through. The union condemned the company's tactics, accusing it of "gaslighting workers" by changing previously agreed-upon offers. With prior voting against a 3.4% pay rise, frustrations have escalated, leading to calls for industrial action. Claire Greer, GMB Scotland organiser, described the shifts in offers as inexplicable and damaging to negotiations, while Unison expressed a similar lack of progress in their discussions. A Scottish Water spokesperson called for renewed dialogue to prevent strikes, emphasizing the need for amicable resolution.
It is by now hard to be surprised at how this company takes part in negotiations but, even for them, this is beyond the pale.
For the company to arrive at talks intended to find a way forward only to produce a completely different and inferior offer is not just frustrating, it is inexplicable.
While the actions of this company are impossible to predict or understand, the response of our members could not be clearer. Enough is enough.
No-one benefits from industrial action, and we would encourage the joint trade unions to resume negotiations as soon as possible so that we can resolve any outstanding issues amicably.
