Reform UK plan to rip up Equalities Act shocking and un-British, says Starmer
"Reform UK's plans to repeal the Equalities Act is shocking and unBritish, Keir Starmer has said, warning legislation that has provided decades of protection for women would be ripped up. In a pre-recorded interview with BBC Breakfast, the prime minister said the legislation was British at its core and represented basic values, before arguing Reform wanted to send women back to the old days when they were not treated equally."
"Can I just say how shocking it is that Reform are suggesting we tear up the Equalities Act. This is decades of protection, it goes to basic values, one of which is should women be treated as equal as men. That is core. That is British. That is something that was fought for and for Reform to say no more, under them we are to go back to old days when women not treated equally I shudder to think what women think of anyone who wants to rip up that proposition."
Keir Starmer condemned Reform UK's proposal to repeal the Equalities Act as shocking and unBritish and warned it would rip up decades of legal protection for women. He said the act embodies basic British values of equality, tolerance, compassion and diversity and highlighted protections on grounds of race, citing past discrimination by landlords. Starmer argued Reform's plan would send women back to an era of unequal treatment and challenged Reform to defend unequal treatment of women. He urged Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor to speak to UK and US authorities about the Jeffrey Epstein scandal and defended the government's U-turn on postponing local elections. Suella Braverman, twice sacked as home secretary, defected to Reform and was named its spokesperson for education, skills and equalities.
