"Companies need to do more to protect loyal consumers"
"Mobile and broadband bills are an essential, everyday cost for millions. But it is clear that companies need to do more to protect their consumers - loyal customers who rely on these services to run businesses and stay in touch with loved ones,"
"When we meet them shortly, I expect company bosses to put forward clear plans to shield Brits from unexpected price rises and improve their customer communications."
Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle warned major telecoms firms to protect customers from unexpected mid-contract price rises and to improve pricing transparency. Ministers called on providers to reaffirm that no customer under contract should face increases beyond what was originally agreed. Firms were urged to proactively shift legacy customers onto simple pounds-and-pence price-increase structures instead of percentage-based, inflation-linked rises that undermine clarity. A Whitehall roundtable with industry leaders will be convened to discuss further consumer protections and identify where government can help unlock investment in next-generation digital infrastructure. Kyle has pressed Ofcom to keep up regulatory pressure on pricing fairness.
