People who stop weight loss drugs return to original weight within year, analysis finds
Briefly

A study by the University of Oxford reveals that patients using GLP-1 weight loss drugs, like Wegovy and Mounjaro, regain all lost weight within a year of stopping treatment. Analysis of 11 studies highlighted that while these drugs can lead to significant weight loss (an average of 8-16kg), rapid weight regain follows cessation. Researchers observed a clear contrast between drug regimens and dietary changes, noting that while diets also resulted in weight regain, it occurred much more slowly, illustrating a critical concern for health authorities regarding treatment sustainability and costs.
"These drugs are very effective at helping you lose weight, but when you stop them, weight regain is much faster than after stopping diets," said Susan Jebb.
"2,000 patients were using higher-dose jabs and typically lost 16kg but regained 9.6kg within a year of stopping treatment, suggesting a rapid weight regain cycle."
