MPs' pay set to increase 2.8% to 93,904 in April
Briefly

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (Ipsa) has proposed a 2.8% salary increase for MPs to 93,904, effective April. This decision links MPs' pay to broader public sector wage increases currently negotiated for workers like teachers and NHS staff. While this increment is above last year's CPI inflation rate of 2.5%, it remains lower than the average public sector wage increase of 4.2% which Ipsa considered. A final decision will come mid-March after a consultation period, and Ipsa also plans a comprehensive review of MPs' pay for future periods.
Ipsa points out that while it typically uses average public sector pay figures published by the ONS in October, it has the flexibility to use other statistics.
Ipsa chair Richard Lloyd stated that the recommendation for a 2.8% pay rise reflects the experience of the wider public sector and the current economic climate.
The 2.8% pay increase is grounded in plans for wider public sector pay negotiations, which are ongoing for teachers and NHS staff.
The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority is expected to finalize the decision on MPs' salaries after a two-week consultation starting on Monday.
