MP Patrick Hurley has called for a review of Axel Rudakubana's 52-year sentence for murdering three young girls in Southport, claiming it is too lenient. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the killings as a major atrocity that shocked the country. While Rudakubana will not be eligible for parole until 2077, there are calls from both government and opposition politicians for legal changes to permit whole life orders for offenders under 18. The Attorney General now has 28 days to consider an appeal against what is seen as an insufficient sentence for such grave crimes.
Patrick Hurley, MP for Southport, asserted that the sentence given to Axel Rudakubana is "not severe enough, it is not long enough for the crimes committed" against the young victims.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the Southport killings as "one of the most harrowing moments in our country's history" and emphasized that the attacker may never be released.
