Safeguarding minister Jess Phillips MP announced plans to recruit 200 additional staff to eliminate a backlog of over 23,000 modern slavery case decisions awaiting Home Office review.
The Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner highlighted that current survivors are enduring extensive wait times for support and recognition as victims of modern slavery, which is unacceptable.
Minister Phillips emphasized the government’s commitment, stating, "This government will use every lever at its disposal to support them [victims] while we pursue those who callously profit from their trauma and misery."
The initiative is a proactive approach to modern slavery, as Phillips called it one of her "top priorities" reflecting the urgency and scale of the issue at hand.
