A survey of HR Directors in retail revealed significant concerns over the Employment Rights Bill, with over 70% anticipating negative impacts on their businesses. Most HRDs believe the Bill may lead to job reductions and decreased job flexibility. Notably, proposals for guaranteed hours threaten part-time positions critical for many employees. Additionally, 52% expect increased employment costs, compounding existing financial pressures like rising National Insurance and the National Living Wage. The Chief Executive of the British Retail Consortium highlighted ongoing job losses and emphasized the need for amendments to the Bill to protect jobs and flexibility in retail roles.
Almost 250,000 jobs have been lost in retail over the last five years and many major retailers have already announced further job cuts on the back of increased costs of employment which kicked in in April.
Over 70% of retail HRDs felt the Bill would have a negative or very negative impact on their business, with fewer than one-in-ten believing it would have a positive impact.
