Killers could serve shorter jail terms for good behaviour, minister signals
Briefly

UK Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced potential reforms to sentencing that could allow serious offenders to receive shorter sentences for good behaviour, amid a crisis in prison overcrowding. As the current prison system nears full capacity, Mahmood emphasized that improvements in short-sentencing alone won't alleviate the issue. The government is exploring a Texas-style incentive system for parole, and despite concerns from critics, significant reforms are anticipated in a review scheduled for publication in the spring.
We are already over 99 per cent capacity and we are filling prison spaces as fast as we can build them and we know already we cannot build our way out of this crisis.
Short sentence reform on its own isn't going to be enough to ease overcrowding, indicating that radical changes to the sentencing system are on the table.
