Lady Frederick Windsor, Sophie Winkleman, highlighted the dangers of smartphones for children during a Policy Exchange event. She argued that smartphones are designed to be habit-forming and can have severe physical and emotional consequences for young users. Winkleman advocated for a ban on smartphones in schools, emphasizing that the negative effects of smartphone useâincluding isolation, obesity, and various health issuesâare profound. Her concerns extend to the need for stronger online safety regulations to protect children in an increasingly digital world.
Even if a child is only watching animal videos for three hours, they're still stationary, isolated and passive. They're simply consuming content, open vessels for other people's garbage often for hours at a time.
I think the impact of smartphones on children's mental and physical health is so immense and so multi-stranded that it's actually impossible to make them safe.
