Universal credit (UC) data published reveals that in June, nearly 8 million people received benefits, with 83.6% being British or Irish nationals. More than 1 million claimants were born overseas, including around 700,000 EU citizens eligible to live and work in the UK post-Brexit. Additionally, 1.5% were refugees and 0.7% arrived through safe routes. Over 75,000 temporary claimants typically ineligible for benefits were also recorded. Responding to pressure, government officials indicated intentions to limit these numbers and adjust eligibility criteria for migrants seeking UC benefits.
