The homelessness minister pledged to end the use of B&Bs as emergency housing by the end of the parliament and described failing to do so as a personal failing. The government launched a three-year homelessness strategy aiming to reduce temporary accommodation use and halve rough sleeping. Shelter data shows homelessness rose 8% in the past year, with more than 380,000 people homeless in England and a record 350,000 in temporary accommodation. Causes cited include constrained incomes, rising costs, and long-term austerity for local councils. Campaigners and the Greater Manchester mayor criticised the government for freezing housing benefit until at least 2026, warning it widens rent-support gaps.
