The home secretary, Yvette Cooper, declined requests from the family of the late MP Sir David Amess for a public inquiry into his murder. She stated it was difficult to see how such an inquiry could yield information beyond the trial of his killer, Ali Harbi Ali, and a recent Prevent review. Sir David's family expressed deep emotional pain and disappointment over Cooper's response, highlighting the continuing impact of the tragedy on their lives.
In her letter, Cooper said a coroner had already looked carefully at whether to resume an inquest into Sir David's death following the criminal trial.
Describing her reaction to the letter, Katie Amess said she felt sadness, betrayal, pain and just heartbreak, really.
