The Competition and Markets Authority granted Google strategic market status under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act. The designation gives the CMA powers to impose legally binding rules on Google’s search and advertising businesses, which account for over 90% of UK online searches. Possible measures include offering alternative search engines via choice screens, greater transparency in ranking algorithms, and increased publisher control over content display and monetisation. The CMA aims to secure fairer competition, more consumer choice, innovation, and reduced barriers for rivals in the £20 billion online advertising market. Google said it will cooperate but warned heavy-handed rules could slow innovation and harm competitiveness.
