Peter Wanless, the NSPCC chief executive, criticized the Conservatives for not improving children's outcomes, stating that during their time in power, indicators showed a decline in children's welfare.
He noted that while government spending on children has increased, it goes primarily into 'the price of failure' rather than effective early intervention, which has seen a 44% decrease since 2010.
Wanless expressed concerns regarding social media, arguing against outright bans, stating, 'it's an easy option for adults to shut them off.' He advocated for 'guardrails' instead of blanket restrictions.
He condemned the failure of past governments to outlaw smacking in England, emphasizing that such moral shortcomings highlight deeper issues in protecting children's rights.
