The c2c railway will be nationalised on Sunday, marking the second operator after SWR. c2c will join a list of nationalised operators managed by the Department for Transport. Approximately 40% of England's train passengers will experience a nationalised service after this change. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander indicated that public ownership aims to address issues such as costs and service fragmentation, leading to the creation of Great British Railways. The next operator scheduled for nationalisation is Greater Anglia in October 2025, with plans to consolidate the existing train companies into one organization.
'Public ownership is already tackling deep-rooted problems we see on the railway that's led to spiralling costs, fragmentation and waste. A unified network under Great British Railways will take this further with one railway under one brand with one mission - delivering excellent services for passengers wherever they travel.'
'Whether you're shopping in Lakeside or walking along the beach in Southend-on-Sea, from this Sunday you will be able to get there on a train service run by the public, for the public.'
