British Steel has officially withdrawn plans to redundantly lay off 2,700 employees at its Scunthorpe plant, following an emergency intervention from the UK government that stabilized the company's operations. The former plans arose after Jingye, the company's parent, aimed to close essential blast furnaces, jeopardizing primary steelmaking in the UK. Government actions included recalling parliament and passing emergency legislation to take temporary control of the company and ensure its continued operation. British Steel confirmed the closure of redundancy discussions and reiterated commitment to maintaining production as essential materials supply was secured.
The action this government took on 12 April, and the measures we've taken since, matter greatly for this country and are of huge importance to thousands of steelworkers and their families.
This has been a difficult and worrying time for British Steel staff and their families. I can, however, confirm that we are closing the redundancy consultation without action.
