Will Ukraine's Neptune long-range missile make a difference? DW 03/21/2025
Briefly

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the newly developed Neptune missile has successfully completed testing and demonstrated combat effectiveness. Used recently against a Russian oil refinery in Tuapse, this missile, a potential modification of the existing Neptune R-360, showcases Ukraine's advancing military technology. The original R-360 has already played a crucial role in the conflict, including the sinking of the Russian cruiser Moskva. Modifications have enhanced its range and targeting capabilities, now able to engage both land and naval targets with improved accuracy and efficiency.
"It is a new Ukrainian rocket, very precise. It has a range of 1,000 kilometers [620 miles]. Many thanks to our Ukrainian developers, manufacturers and our military," he wrote on Telegram.
Experts told DW that the new rocket is likely a modification of Ukraine's Neptune R-360 anti-ship missile, employed by Ukrainian forces since 2020.
The R-360 has an explosive payload of up to 150 kilograms (331 pounds) and has a range of up to 300 kilometers, first used in battle against the Russian frigate Admiral Essen.
Representatives from Ukraine's Defense Ministry indicated that improvements made to the R-360 give it the capability to strike both land and sea-based targets, with a range improved to 400 kilometers.
