"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story."
"Motorists could be paying more for fuel than they need to, according to the UK's competition watchdog, after they found profit margins remained persistently high and unexplained. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said that despite prices falling at the pump year-on-year, fuel companies have reported rising profit margins that could not be explained by operating cost pressures - the explanation used by fuel companies. It added the margins show that competition in the sector is weak and therefore pump prices are not coming down as much as they could."
"The analysis comes ahead of government plans to introduce a fuel finder tool in 2026, allowing drivers to compare real-time fuel prices. The CMA said it would take action against retailers who do not provide data to the scheme. Dan Turnbull, senior director of markets at the CMA, said: Fuel margins remain at persistently high levels and our new analysis shows operating costs do not explain this. This indicates competition in the sector is weak if it was"
Journalists are being deployed to cover developing stories on reproductive rights, climate change, Big Tech, and political finance, funded by donations that keep reporting free and accessible without paywalls. Donations allow reporters to gather facts, produce documentaries like 'The A Word', and present perspectives from both sides. The UK Competition and Markets Authority found fuel profit margins remained persistently high and could not be explained by operating cost pressures, suggesting weak competition. Despite year-on-year falls in pump prices, rising reported margins indicate motorists may be charged more than necessary. The government plans a 2026 fuel finder tool and the CMA will enforce retailer data provision.
