A senior US official has expressed opposition towards the UK government's demand for Apple to incorporate a backdoor into its encryption system. Tulsi Gabbard, the US national intelligence director, highlighted her concerns in a letter to Congress, emphasizing that such actions could not only infringe upon the privacy rights of American citizens but also create significant security risks, potentially exposing sensitive data to exploitation by adversaries. Gabbard categorized the proposed requirements for backdoor access as a severe and unacceptable violation of civil liberties.
"I share your grave concern about the serious implications of the United Kingdom, or any foreign country, requiring Apple or any company to create a backdoor that would allow access to Americans personal encrypted data," Gabbard wrote.
"This would be a clear and egregious violation of Americans' privacy and civil liberties and open up a serious vulnerability for cyber exploitation by adversarial actors."
