UK records hottest day of the year so far, with warnings of more extreme heat this weekend
Temperatures in the UK reached 30.5C in Kent, marking the hottest day of the year so far. Frittenden recorded 30C in May for the first time since 2012. Forecasters expect continued hot weather over the bank holiday weekend, with the UK likely to see its hottest May day on record on Monday. Southern England and the Midlands could reach 33C, while Sunday afternoon temperatures are expected around 31C in the south and about 26C in the north. UV levels are expected to be high, with a UV index of seven in Manchester on Sunday. High pressure is expected to bring very warm sunshine across England and Wales, with more cloud and a few showers in north-west Scotland. Amber heat health alerts are in place for multiple regions until 5pm on Wednesday, with yellow alerts for additional areas.
"The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued amber heat health alerts for the East Midlands, West Midlands, the east of England, London and the south-east. The alerts will remain in place until 5pm on Wednesday and replace less severe yellow alerts, which were previously issued. The alerts mean there is likely to be a rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions and increased demand on all health and social care services, according to the UKHSA website. Yellow alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England, Yorkshire and Humber, and the south-west."
