Turkey detains journalists amid protests over jailing of Erdogan rival
Briefly

Turkey is experiencing widespread protests following the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, a key rival to President Erdogan. Authorities have responded with detentions of several journalists, viewed as an encroachment on press freedoms. The Disk-Basin-Is union criticized these actions, asserting that the truth cannot be concealed by silencing media. Imamoglu's arrest on corruption charges has raised concerns about the political suppression of opposition figures ahead of the 2028 presidential election, as analysts suggest this may be a strategic move by Erdogan to eliminate his most popular competitor.
"You cannot hide the truth by silencing journalists!" the Disk-Basin-Is union wrote on the social media platform X, while calling for their immediate release.
The detention of Imamoglu - a member of the Republican People's Party (CHP) and arguably the most popular figure among the opposition - is widely seen as a political move to remove a major challenger to Erdogan from the next presidential race in 2028.
Since becoming president in 2014, Erdogan has consistently targeted journalists. The NGO Reporters Without Borders said last year that during Erdogan's decade in power, 77 journalists have been convicted of ‘insulting the president.’
