TfL users urged to 'act like a friend' to victims
"Our new campaign shows how powerful it can be to strike up a conversation with the targeted person and treat them like a friend, to help them feel less alone and make the first steps towards reporting the incident."
"No-one should be a victim of hate crime or harassment in London or feel anxious or targeted because of who they are. TfL's new campaign gives Londoners the knowledge and confidence to stand up to hate crime, address intolerant behaviours and safely challenge hateful narratives."
Transport for London urges passengers to step in when fellow commuters face hate crimes or harassment by approaching the victim and engaging them as if they were an old friend. The recommended tactic is to start a conversation that makes the targeted person feel less alone and discourages predators from continuing abusive behaviour. TfL and Protection Approaches are offering free training on active bystander techniques. Passengers are advised to intervene only when it is safe to do so. A campaign video based on real incidents will be shown in cinemas and on ITVX, coinciding with National Hate Crime Awareness Week.
