Sweden to abolish residency permit 'track changes' from April 1st
Briefly

The Swedish parliament has decided to abolish 'track changes', which previously allowed rejected asylum seekers to obtain work permits without leaving the country. The new rules, effective April 1st, lack transitional provisions, meaning many current permit holders, estimated around 4,700 individuals, will not be able to extend their permits and will have to exit Sweden upon expiration. The Migration Agency has indicated that those affected may need to seek alternative residence permits, but the vast majority will be compelled to leave.
Without transitional rules, the new legislation will also have consequences for people who are currently working and supporting themselves.
We will examine whether there are other grounds for a residence permit or whether there are grounds for not enforcing deportation.
