We find that donor refugee costs, far from reducing, have actually increased. Value for money risks have not been reduced, given that the same number of asylum seekers are accommodated in hotels as of 31 December 2023... at extremely high costs to the UK taxpayer.
The report accuses the government of a maximalist approach that leads to aid budget not being used effectively, impacting the integrity of UK international development strategic priorities.
The Home Office's spending on hotel costs for asylum seekers, funded by the aid budget, has risen to 8.2m a day despite using fewer hotels, showing inefficiency in budget allocation.
