RSPCA warns animal neglect is soaring, especially at Christmas
Briefly

The RSPCA reported a significant rise in animal neglect cases across the UK, with 48,814 incidents recorded in just the first nine months of 2024, marking a 25% increase from the previous year’s figures. This alarming trend appears to be exacerbated by both the growing rates of pet ownership and the financial strains of the ongoing cost of living crisis, leading many pet owners to struggle in adequately caring for their animals.
The charity emphasized that neglect does not pause for festive seasons. Last year alone, on Christmas Day, the RSPCA’s emergency cruelty line received around 775 calls related to cases of neglect. Over the festive period from December 18 to January 2, a total of 25,230 reports were made, suggesting the problem is rampant and persistent, regardless of the time of year.
