Paul Mallin, who was convicted for the brutal killing of Karen Read and John Down at a sheltered housing unit in Ilford, died of natural causes aged 59 while on compassionate release from prison. Diagnosed with cancer in 2022, he passed away in a hospice. In 2016, he received a 19-year sentence after pleading guilty to manslaughter, driven by anger over his fiancée's engagement to a neighbor. The chilling details of the attack reveal premeditation and a violent rage, with both victims defenseless at the time of their deaths.
In the months before their deaths, Mallin had stabbed Mr Down's wall with a knife and spat at him in the care home's office.
Judge Richard Marks KC, who sentenced Mallin, said: They were completely defenceless and highly vulnerable. They suffered terrible injuries and met their deaths in the worst possible circumstances.
